Day 39
Dear Jumblewhiskers,
there was more fish for breakfast and it's better than eating kobold I'm sure but I wish we had something else for a change. Something like toast and eggs and bacon, or those fat little sausages which sizzle in the pan. When I said so, Vrost was quick to remind me I didn't have wheat or a pig or a chicken so it was out of the question. Instead I made the fish smell and seem like sausages and it only upset my stomach a little to have something inside which wasn't what it tasted like. Katel didn't want sausages so he cooked his own fish, he can have his boring meal. I was only doing people a favour! And it was hard work but I think it went pretty well. I'm very proud of some of my illusions. Then I had to remind everyone about the orcs, because they never pay attention. Tiny was trying to get Gufark to go outside so I think she at least felt the urgency. She has a very simple mind but at the same time sometimes she is disturbingly astute. We found a dying kobold out in the snow, he dragged himself all the way to our cave, and I'm pretty sure he's the last kobold warrior left alive. There are probably other weaker kobolds still hiding in caves but they're not a big threat anymore. Tiny wanted me to talk with him, but I don't like talking to kobolds and if I do it while everyone is looking they probably make me interpret all the time! I made an illusion of another kobold and I'm really proud of that one because it was almost lifelike and it could also move and talk! Maybe it didn't feel or taste or smell real but it was still very good and I want to show it to you when I get back. I had it translate so Nalin could ask her questions about how their attack went. Maybe he left one or two things out like that the wind staff controls not just the winds but the gods themselves, and invented a few words the kobold might have said like that Tiny really needed a bath, but he was pretty accurate most of the time. The kobold said they crept up to the orc camp using a holy magic staff to cause a bilzzard so the orcs wouldn't see them coming, but they were defeated and now the orcs have the staff and that would be a disaster. And that we should avenge the dead kobold warriors. And he'd come with us, and also shared some healing potions. They already killed some orcs too so it shouldn't be too hard. My illusory kobold then said they should leave gold and gems outside tonight to pay for his translations and they said okay so Child can collect those later. I'm not sure about Vrost. He was frozen over yesterday which is a stupid thing to do but he recovered. And he realized the kobold wasn't real unlike most of the others which is pretty clever. And sometimes he is friendly, but he'd also try to convince the group that my kobold was fake and they shouldn't leave gems outside later on which is very mean of him. Gufark thought we should go out to do as the kobold said, he probably just wanted something to punch because he doesn't use his mind that much. Then Katel said he didn't like to fight and I thought we should just trick the orcs too, but Vrost made an ice bridge to the orc camp and we all went there and when I asked if there was a plan Gufark just said we were going to kill the orcs which isn't that much of a plan if you think about it. I thought the orcs probably had a better plan, and there were no dead kobolds anywhere so maybe they were all working together against us! It seemed quiet for a little while at least. Then everyone fought orcs who were often hiding beneath the snow and tried to ambush us from two directions several times and there were way way more than sixteen of them too. Tiny got wounded, while Gufark and Vrost and Katel nearly died. I had to bind Gufark's wounds or he'd bleed out completely! I think only Nalin and I avoided most of the trouble because we're smarter than this tribe. When people started to fall down I had to hurry and conceal myself! But a little later when everyone more or less recovered there was only one orc left in sight and that one had the magic staff so I ran over and hit it on the head with a piece of timber. Then the kobold stole the staff before I could grab it and he ran off and everyone else left too. I thought it would be better to find all the other orcs who were in hiding and kill them too if that was the plan since we were doing okay so far. At least, Nalin and I were. Tiny turned herself into a bear which means she must have been fit to fight more as well. But everyone else insisted we'd go back to the cave and Vrost melted his ice bridge and the kobold was already there and left the staff at the bone altar they had standing there. I think the kobold plans to stay with us a while, maybe to kill us while we sleep. No one else seems to understand how cunning they can be! I do know one thing for sure, and that's that this tribe is living in some kind of dream world. They have the strangest priorities and reactions.
Love,
Zindra
